Moving from Qingdao to Seattle

Seattle, the largest city in the northwestern United States, boasts a stable economy, a strong educational atmosphere, and an excellent living environment—along with its gloomy weather, with rain falling most of the year. Despite this, it has become increasingly popular among immigrants in recent years and has become their preferred place of residence after immigrating to the US. Ms. Su from Qingdao moved her whole family to settle in Seattle so that her children could access better educational resources.

Ms. Su found Seapoe Relo through a friend's referral and signed the shipping contract after a brief inquiry and exchange. Ms. Su had a large number of items to ship—sofas, a piano, furniture, tables and chairs, clothing, and more—enough to fill a 40-foot container. Ensuring the safety of so many items in transit made the packing work extremely important. In line with Ms. Su's travel schedule, Seapoe Relo staff visited her home to collect and pack the items a few days in advance. Each item was packed using standard methods—PE foam inside and cardboard outside—to ensure that the items would not be damaged by knocks or bumps during transit. After packing, the items were transported to Seapoe Relo's warehouse and, following customs declaration, ocean shipping, customs clearance, and delivery, were delivered to Ms. Su's home in Seattle. The entire process took about a month and a half.

Notes on shipping household goods from Qingdao to Seattle:

1. Documents required by Chinese customs for immigrants to declare personal belongings: passport photo page, visa scan, and packing list;

2. The US allows new immigrants to bring in personal belongings used for more than one year duty-free. New immigrants are advised to bring items of relatively high value, such as collectibles, pianos, and rosewood furniture.

3. For items that are heavy, valuable, or fragile—such as electrical appliances, pianos, furniture, ceramics, and handicrafts—it is recommended to use fumigation-free wooden crates with proper filling to prevent damage from compression; lightweight items such as daily necessities and books can be packed in cardboard boxes;

4. US customs inspections are strict and frequent. Many environment-related items such as milk, meat, and soil are prohibited. Customers are advised not to bring such items; if discovered, they will at best be destroyed on the spot, or at worst result in a fine of up to USD 5,000, and may also affect your chances of entering the US.
